What is stratification?

The laws of physics tell us that colder water is heavier than warm water. So it makes sense that colder water is on the bottom and warmer water is on the surface. In fact, it only takes a 3-degree difference for distinct separation (thermocline) to form. When this separation, or layering, occurs it is called stratification.
